I can't speak for all people, but I can tell you why I have used a web-cam in the past. The first use of a web-cam was at our receptionists desk. If a visitor came in for someone, you could hit the company intranet and see the visitor. The next use was on myself at work. There were two reasons for this. One was so that people could see if I was at my desk before they trudged down to the basement. The other use was for friends and family to see where I worked and what my work environment was like. This contributed to future conversations about my job and where I work. The next use was at home during special events. There were times where certain relatives could not attend an event. Rather than them waiting for pictures, they were invited to a web page to watch a child have a birthday. I would gather that there is a bit of exhibitionism and self-importance in the use of a web-cam, but there are more reasons than that. One of which is... it can be fun!

Hard to thoroughly answer is question without writing a book... Cams or Camshafts are used to open and close the intake and exhaust valves and are critical in the manner of the way the engine runs. Older or OHV design engines mostly used push rods that the cam (located in the center of the block just above (and connected to)the crankshaft) would press into the cylinder head area onto a rocker arm, thus rotating and depressing one valve per cam lobe. The # of lobes depends on the # of valves and the size / style of engine. Newer engines use cams inside the head just above the valves or OHC design. This allows the camshaft to be in direct contact with the valve, thus aiding in the efficiency and overall power output of the engine itself and eliminating the need for push rods.
