It was harsh and cruel. Many miners hardly even found gold. There was starvation and diseases spread quickly as there was hardly and medicine that time. Many people got killed because there was no water. People lived in tents with their families and they usually had rips in the tent. A few of the miners names were Edward Hargraves, Patrick Taylor, james. W Marshall and James .etc

it was very difficult. you worked long hours of hard labor to search and search and many times it was futile. even finding specks or dust was considered grand. the towns mostly shot up overnight and products were really expensive. the owners were trying to get quick profits due to the huge rush of eager prospectors. the owners took advantage of them with high prices. their was heavy drinking and prostitution in the typical kinda saloon setting and theft were rampant as well as killings.

In the gold rush of 1849, many people flocked from the east to California looking to strike it rich. There were so many people that moved to California that it was able to become a state. Also, in the 1897-1898 gold rush in the Yukon Territory, many people stopped what they were doing to go to Dawson in the Yukon Territory. Life on the way to Dawson was very cold (-60 degrees) and there was 70 feet of snow! It was also very unforgiving and unlikely that the newcomers could even survive the journey through the snow, rapids, an avalanche, and illness. Only about 400 out of 1,000,000 made a lot of money
