It was originally the state motto of Virginia, but John Wilkes Booth is attributed to have said it, when he jumped to the bottom of Ford's Theatre after killing President Lincoln.

Allegedly it was first said by Brutus while assassinating Caesar. John Wilkes Booth said it while shooting Lincoln in the theatre. It is also, ironically, the motto of the State of Virginia.
