Mother Teresa influenced many people of the world. Her inspiration was God. She lived her life helping people. She took care of the homeless and gave them a place to stay, she gave food to the hungry, and to the children that were abandoned she gave them love and hope. Some of her students were inspired by her, and when they grew up, they decided to help her in her cause. She stood up for what she believed was right. She taught and showed people the true meaning of love and not to hold hate in their hearts. For more information, please refer to the 'Related Links' below.

Mother Teresa was given the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu at baptism, but when she became a nun she took the name Teresa in honor of St. Therese of Lisieux, a 19th century Carmelite nun and the patron of missionaries. Mother Teresa may have been deeply influenced by the spiritual life of St Therese (her autobiography 'Story of a Soul') and may have sought to imitate her in loving Christ. It was Mother Teresa's encounter with Christ that led her to believe that in loving and caring for the poor she was loving Christ.

When Mother Teresa was young, she read stories on the lives of missionaries. She was so inspired, that by the age of 12 yrs. old, she knew that the religious life was her calling. Also, on September 10, 1946, Jesus inspired her to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.

On September 10, 1946, Teresa experienced what she later described as "the call within the call" while traveling by train to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling from Calcutta for her annual retreat. "I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith."
