What's the difference between a French Bordeaux and a California Cabernet sauvignon?

In the U.S. varietal wines are named after the dominant grape used to make them. In France (except for Alscace) they're named for the region in which the grapes are grown. The predominant grape in Bordeaux is Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but some of the grand crus chateaus use mostly, if not exclusively, Merlot. It is worth noting that very few wine experts would fail to recognize grand crus or premiere crus Bordeaux or would confuse them with California Cabernets. The so-called great-growth and first-growth wines are affected by their unique terroir, which imparts unmistakable attributes and charactersitics to them that California wines do not possess. To our California palate, a Bourdeaux will taste quite different from a Cabernet. French wines (in general) have a more earthy flavor and it does have to do with the land and the many, many years the vines have been producing.Bordeaux is somewhat of an acquired taste. After drinking Cabs from CA, you may be surprised. It's fun to do a taste test. Some good info given so far, well done guys. Here's few extra bits you might find interesting. The five red grapes grown in Bordeaux are: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec. ALL Bordeaux reds are a blend of one or more of those grapes. Its worth nothing that if a bottle of Californian wine states the grape variety only 75% of the wine must be made from that grape (85% if its being sold into the EU), so basically most Californian Cabernet Sauvignons may be blends!

What are some of the best wineries in Californias Dry Creek Valley?

Some of the wineries that produce wines of excellent quality includes Nalle. Pezzi King, Rafanelli, Michael Schlumberger, and Ferrari-Carrano. Nalle Winery is best known for its Zinfandels but it also makes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The Zinfandel's of Nalle are often blended with grape varietals that work extremely well with Zin: Syrah, Petite Sirah,Carigagne, Gamay and Alicante Bouchet. At Pezzi King Winery the Zinfandels is what these fine producers specialize in, but, be sure not to miss their other wines as well. The winery also makes award winning Sauvingnon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Rafanelli is prized for its collectible harder to purchase Zins and Michael Schlumberger's Merlot is rich, smooth and oaky. Ferrari-Carrano is the largest and widest distributed of the wineries listed. The winery produces wine of many grape varietals which includes Chardonnay, Syarah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Sangiovese & Pinot Noir. If you have a chance to visit the winery or purchase wines from your favorite wine shop be sure to try their wines made from blends such as the Siena (Italian grape varietals) and signature blend Tresor. Ferrari-Caranno's latest project has been the Prevale label of wines.

Are red wines more popular than white wines?

Depends would be my best answer. What do you call a 'kind'? Wines could be categorized by country/region of origin, type of grape, year, taste, etc. Combined, there are hundreds if not thousands of labels available for sale.

What are the different types of wine?

There are many different styles of wine, but most wines are either Red or White. A few wines are Rosé (pink colour in between). Red wines are usually red because they have been left to stand on the grapeskin during fermentation. It isn't (usually) because of the colour of the grape - Champagne is made partly from a Red grape (the Pinot Noir). Wines can also be Sweet or Dry. So you can have Sweet Red, Dry Red, Sweet White, Dry White (but there are very few Sweet Red wines). Dry Red wines are often further classified into Clarets (light and fruity) and Burgundies (heavy and earthy) - depending on the main grape that they are made from. Claret grapes include the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot and the Malbec. Burgundy grapes include the Shiraz (Syrah), Pinot Noir, and Gamay.

What factor considers a wine to be expensive?

Most wineries will charge whatever they think the market will support. The price of a wine is not an indication of its quality. Wineries with good reputations can charge more for their wine. Wineries located in regions known for their wines can often charge more than wine produced elsewhere. For example, a Napa Cabernet will generally sell for a higher price than a Cabernet produced in Livermore or some other less recognized area.

Can you substitute cabernet sauvignon for sherry in a recipe?

You can substitute Madeira for sherry for the most part, however, as an aperitif, Sherry Amontillado is my preference. Mario Lopez
