In the days when we had conscription many people did. They felt that a reasonable number of Australians should have military training should the need arise. This attitude changed as time went by especially after the people having seen the military disaster committed in Vietnam. Australians felt that conscription was for defense not aggression as it turned out. Australian leaders who supported conscription included: ALP Prime Minister Billy Hughes, who attempted to introduce full conscription during WWI. During WWII, ALP prime Minister John Curtin, who had opposed conscription during WWI, was forced to reconsider its introduction. After WWII, as a result of escalating tensions between the Soviet bloc and the West, Liberal Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies introduced conscription as National Service for men 18 and over.

Conscription is now being dropped in many countries.
Conscription deeply divided Australia in the early 1900's. Many families (and citizens for that matter) did not agree with boyhood conscription, so an opposition was formed. Conscription is no longer practiced in Australia.
