Brigham Young is generally attributed as the leader of the Mormon exodus from the midwest to what is now Utah. He didn't personally lead every company but he is largely responsible for choosing where they ended, appointing trail leaders, and organizing assistance for those in need.
Joseph Smith was the first president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often mistakenly called the Mormon Church) and organized the church on April 6, 1830, under the direction of Jesus Christ. Joseph led the Saints through much persecution. The Saints were continually thrust out of their homes and the communities they often helped build. Many thought they had reached peace when they settled Nauvoo, Illinois. However, the peace was not to last. Mobs descended once again and killed Joseph Smith in cold blood while he was in prison on trumped up charges.
After Joseph Smith's death, many persecutors of the church thought that the members would disperse and the seemingly fledgling church would fall apart. They were not counting, however, on the faith of the Saints that Joseph Smith had been a prophet called of God who would be replaced by another prophet, also called of God. No hand can stop the work of the Lord.
Brigham Young was the next man to be called to serve God as prophet in our day. Along with the other church leaders, he helped to fulfill the revelation that Joseph Smith had received while still alive that God intended the Saints to move West. It took a great deal of planning and a massive effort, but the Saints did eventually leave the East Coast and the boundaries of the civilized United States for the wilderness that was in the West. They felt they would finally have some peace away from their enemies. While this was also not to be the case, Brigham Young faithfully led the Saints to settle in the Salt Lake Valley of the Utah Territory.
Thousands of Saints came by either horse and wagon or ox and wagon. Hundreds of others came much later by handcart, walking and pulling their belongings with them thousands of miles. Once the Transcontinental Railroad was finished, many more Saints arriving from Europe by boat were then able to take the train West.
Brigham Young was an inspired leader with a keen sense of leadership and organization. When something needed to be done, he called people to help, and he served himself as well, doing what needed to be done to accomplish the work of God.

The people responsible for causing it were the mobs and government in Illinois and Missouri. The person responsible for leading it was Brigham Young. Although the colony was called "Great Salt Lake City", not "New Zion", and it was not on the shore of the Great Salt Lake but about 20 miles south east of the southernmost tip of the lake.
