The first US astronaut into space was Alan Shepard, who made a suborbital flight on May 5, 1961. This was followed by another suborbital flight by Gus Grissom, and by a three-orbit flight by John Glenn on February 20, 1962. The US astronauts were part of NASA's Project Mercury.
