To win the Archibald prize, the artwork must be a portrait (preferably) of a man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics and be made by someone who lived in Australasia in the past year the of date fixed for sending in the artworks.
The entries for the Archibald prize are democratically judged by the Art Gallery of NSW's Board of Trustees. Currently the board has 11 members, including the President Mr. Steven M. Lowry, and the Vice President Ms. Sandra McPhee.
