In this day and age, there aren't any more real prophets around, as the time of new prophesy has passed. Prophets were people who told others of things to come, which always came true, each and every time. If their prophesies did not come to pass, they were killed via stoning or some other manner. True prophets, all of which are in The Bible, were told to prophesy by God Himself, as he created time and everything else, and since the prophesy came from God, and He can't lie, they always came true. Many people in human history have claimed to be prophets, Mohammed like many others, but they are not really prophets. Nostradamus seems to have deceived many, but as accurate as he seems to be, his "prophesies" aren't that specific, as true prophesies are pretty detailed, and plus not all of his "prophesies" have come true, meaning that he is not a real prophet. As aforementioned, all of a prophet's prophesies must come true to be authentic. Therefore, a prophesies are certainly a dangerous manner, because in the old days, making just one wrong one could end in a very brutal death. Also, even the prophets (before they knew they were or even after) wouldn't try to second guess God for they realized the danger too. All due respect to the answer above and anybody who holds that view as their belief, in reality and according to the John the Revelator in the direct translation of his Revelation written from the Isle of Patmos, the Spirit of prophesy is the testimony of Jesus. Another scripture says that God will do nothing save he reveal his secret unto his servants, the prophets. So a prophet is not just somebody who tells of future events. The spirit of Prophesy is the testimony of Jesus. Thus, in one sense, any man who has a testimony of Jesus has the spirit of prophesy. In another sense, "Prophet" is the actually calling of the representative of Christ on the earth, who has received a special witness of Christ, and has been chosen to be a leader of God's organization on the Earth. For in any time when the true church has been on the earth, it has been lead by Prophets who had received Authority from God to administer unto the children of men on the earth.

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He called prophets, and in any time when the children of men are willing to accept His word, he will call Prophets to lead us and guide us, that we may become like unto Christ.

Important to note: The New Testament tells us that not all are chosen to be Prophets, though we all would that we could have the spirit of prophesy.

I know that God calls prophets today. In fact, the Church of Jesus Christ is on the earth today. The times of actually prophesies of future events has not ceased. God loved the people of antiquity, and he sent them prophets. He loves us, and so long as we are willing to listen, he sends us prophets. He is preparing the world for the second coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ. He will come again.

You can hear opinions clashing between sects, and ask--what shall I do? But if you really desire to know the truth of anything, all you need to do is ask God, and be willing to do what is right no matter what. Seek out the Church of Jesus Christ. It is the one that bears His name, and you will find that Christ is at the head, and Prophets and Apostles are His mouthpiece just as they always have been, for God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

If you do what is right no matter what, and seek to know for yourself the truth of all things, God will hold nothing back from you.

This is how you can find out whether or not there are prophets today, where the true church is, and what you need to do to be in harmony with God and obtain all of the choice blessings which could be yours. This is what is meant by seeking, asking, and knocking, that you may find, receive, and that the door may be opened unto you. I know that these things are true, because I have asked, and I have received. PROPHETS COME FROM GOD AKA ALLAH AND THEY ARE HIS MESSENGERS SO I KINDA AGREE WITH THE FIRST AWNSER, BUT THE SECOND ONE... UMMM DOSE CHRISNTYS HAVE PROPHETS? IF THEY DO I NEVER KNEW THAT. I HAVE RECHED MY POINT... XD FRM: MIMI

A prophet is one who utters divinely inspired revelations. In the Old Testament, a prophet was someone who had a direct connection with God. As such, he or she made comments on current affairs, pointed out failures of kings and society to follow the will of God and often predicted dire consequences if the king and the nation do not return to their covenant with God and keep his commandments.

The word prophet comes from the Greek "prophetes", made up of two words:

'Pro' meaning 'in front of' and 'Phemi' meaning 'say'.

So a prophet is 'a speaker out in front of' who claims his messages are of divine origin.

Islam:

A prophet is a messenger from God who spreads the knowledge of religion [Islam]

A Prophet is a holy person chosen by Almighty God to guide humans to the right path and lead a pious life according to the commands of Almighty God. He preaches to peole to worship ONLY ONE Almighty God (Allah in Arabic).

It may be noted that all prophets were Men. No woman was chosen as a prophet.

A prophet is a spokesperson for God. The prophet warns, directs, encourages, teaches and counsels. He brings the word of God to the people of God and calls the people to respond.
Answer:
The prophets were called upon by God to guide the people and to guide the king. While the king had authority in national matters of state, and the Sanhedrin (Sages) had say in Torah-rulings and halakha (law), the prophets spoke in matters of ethics, of belief, of loyalty to God, and behavior. They rebuked the people at God's command, they predicted events which God revealed to them, they taught through Divine inspiration, and they provided optimism and hope with the prophecies of eventual Redemption.
Some of the prophetical chapters (or books) detail Israelite history and past events, some exhort the people to improve their spiritual level, some predict events and/or warn (especially concerning the First Destruction), some serve to comfort the nation, some speak of prayer and love of God, and some speak of life, experience and wisdom.

A 'prophet of God' was a person through whom a divine message was revealed. According to the Bible, there were true and false prophets(Matthew 7:15-23, 2Peter 2:1-3; 1John 4:1-3) just as there are true and false Gods (Luke 4:8)(Psalms 83:18)(Exodus 20:3-5)(Jeremiah 10:10, 11).

A TRUE Prophet of God was, first of all, a loyal and obedient follower of the TRUE God(according to the Bible), and acted as His spokesman, announcing God's will and purpose to those who needed to hear.(Luke 1:70; Acts 3:18-21)(1Kings 12:22; 2Kings 4:9; 23:17)(Jeremiah 23:18; Amos 3:7; 1Kings 17:1)

He was more than just someone who predicted the future.

A TRUE PROPHET in the scriptures always :

**Spoke in the name of the true God (Deuteronomy 18:20)

**Spoke the truth, and the prophecy he declared would ALWAYS come true(Deuteronomy 18:21+22)

**Promoted true worship(Deuteronomy 13:1-4) and

**Was a moral advocate for what was right in God's sight(Isaiah 1:10-20, Micah 6:1-12)

In ancient times, true prophets played a valuable part in seeing that true worship was maintained, as they kept an eye on the kings of Israel and Judah, and corrected rulers who made mistakes by speaking God's words to them (2Samuel 12:1-12), and proclaiming God's judgments to those who were wicked. (1Kings 14:1-16; 16:1-7, 12)

To the ancient Hebrews, a prophet was someone thoughtto be able to communicate with God on behalf of the people. He was not expected to be able to predict the future.

In later times, and particularly in Christianity, a prophet came to be a person claimed to be able to prophesy future events.

A prophet is a person who speaks for God. It means mouth of God, and thus God's truth. It is not intended to be predictions of the future but rather includes knowing the end result of physical laws and of behavioral outcomes. Only in that way is it futuristic. God does not do Magic, he is not magical, the word that means to believe as Persian Magi believe what which is which disputes that which is illusion with that which is mystical powers contrary to nature.
