Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was the President of Liberia in 2010. She became President of Liberia on 2006 January 16, making her the first female President of Liberia and the only female head of state in Africa.
Sirleaf entered politics in 1972 after earning a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, and she served as the Assistant Finance Minister before becoming Finance Minister later in her career. Forced into exile by the 1980 coup, she later raised funds in Liberia's first civil war for the rebellion. After Liberia's second civil war ended in 2003, she served as head of the Governance Reform Commission before becoming president.
