Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, a 1947 magna cum laude graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, was President Gerald Ford's sole nominee to the Supreme Court. He was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 98-0, and began serving on December 19, 1975, in the seat formerly held by Justice William O. Douglas.

Born in April 1920, the 90-year-old Justice Stevens is currently the Senior Associate Justice on the Court, and has served under three Chief Justices (Warren E. Burger, William H. Rehnquist, and John G. Roberts). As of June 2010, he has been a member of the High Court for more than 34 years. He is expected to retire at the end of this month.

Justice Stevens is the second-oldest justice ever to serve on the US Supreme Court, behind Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who was just a few months short of his 91st birthday when he retired.
