The first electrically amplified guitar was designed in 1931 by George Beauchamp, General Manager at National Guitar Corporation with Paul Barth who was Vice President. The maple body prototype for the one piece cast aluminum "Frying Pan" was built by Harry Watson, factory superintendent of National Guitar Corporation. Commercial production began in late summer of 1932 by the Ro-Pat-In Corporation (Electro-Patent-Instrument Company Los Angeles), a partnership of Beauchamp, Adolph Rickenbacker (originally Rickenbacher), and Paul Barth. By 1934 the company was renamed Rickenbacker Electro Stringed Instrument Company.I hope this helps,- Roxas_Riku

Though many would like to believe that Les Paul invented the first amplified guitar, he simply tested various ways to add a microphone to the bridge, it was George Beauchamp who invented the first amplified guitar in 1931 and an electric instrument company in league with Adolph Rickenbacker began production in 1932. By 1934, the company was renamed to Rickenbacker and still have many popular Guitars sold today.

That is a matter of debate among guitar historians, but most agree that it was a lap steel guitar that looked rather like a long handled frying pan, and it was invented by Adolph Rickenbacker in the 1930's. By the end of the 1930's several concerns were making conventional hollow-body electric guitars.
