The Green Berets practice "unconventional warfare" in its many forms. The Green Berets are organized into elite commando units, each consisting of 12 members, which conduct stealth raids and ambushes. In addition to direct combat, Green Berets are trained for guerrilla war, sabotage, and subversion. An aspiring Green Beret must serve about three years in the Army before applying. From there, he enters a two-year long "pipeline" before being assigned to an operational group. Every Green Beret must learn to speak a foreign language.

The Army Rangers are light infantrymen that perform many of the same duties as the Green Berets raids, ambushes, and airfield seizures "by land, by sea, or by air." Any 18-year-old male may apply to the Rangers when enlisting. The specialized training takes one and a half to two years.

To put it simply, being an Army Ranger means you completed the 61-day Army Ranger's School to be qualified in special warfare.

The Green Barets are the US Army's Special Operations Group as a whole.

Two very different forces, with very different roles. The Army Rangers are an elite unit of infantry, whereas Special Forces deals more in fields such as asymmetrical warfare, advisory and training of foreign military forces and indigenous personnel, that sort of thing. Comparing the two really is comparing apples and Oranges.

You can be qualified as both, and you could serve in both outfits during the course of your career, but you can't be in both units simultaneously.

If you go to us army ranger school can you still become a green beret?

Yes you can. you probably have a better chance of getting into green berets if you are a ranger. That is if you are already enlisted. If you havnt joined yet talk to a recruiter about 18x which will garentee you a spot at the SF training. p.s. its Special Forces. Green beret is a hat. ----------------------- Yes and no. From the physical requirement standpoint, yes, being a Ranger will definately help you through Selection and the Q Course. HOWEVER, SF looks for a different type of soldier, with different personality traits than the Rangers look for. Sometimes being a Ranger (and having a "Ranger mentality") can hurt your chances of selection.

Who wears the black beret in the army special forces?

either the seals, navy, or marines or military people in Iraq who r geerals or somthin Special Forces wear the green beret. Paratroopers wear the red beret. Until a few years ago US Army Rangers were the only ones allowed to wear the black beret, but in a controversial decision all US Army personnel were given the black beret to improve their morale. To placate the Rangers they were given a beret of a different color, tan or khaki if I am not mistaken.

Why is the special forces beret green?

Around WW2, select US Army Rangers and OSS operatives were taken over to the UK to complete the British commando course. Upon completion, they were issued the green beret. After the war, these soldiers then went on to become the first members of the newly formed Army Special Forces. They kept the British green berets as a sign of pride, but they were not sanctioned for wear by the Army. President Kennedy saw an exhibition by them and was very impressed, officially authorizing the beret to wear by US Special Forces only. The Army then took a Canadian beret design and created new US Army green berets for the Special Forces soldiers. There's more information on this on the US Army Special Forces Wikipedia page.
