Guy Fawkes was a man born on 13th April 1570 in York who died in January 1606. He was the most famous plotter of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, a plan to blow up King James I of England. He was caught attempting to light a fuse underneath the House of Lords and then tortured for information. On 31st January, 1606, he and his co-conspirators were due to be executed, on which day Guy Fawkes commited suicide.

Bonfire Night (November 5th) was a public holiday until the late 1800s. One popular tradition is burning effigies or 'guys' on a - surprise, surprise - bonfire. The word 'guy' first entered the English language with this meaning, but then went on to mean any male person. And all because of Guy.

He was part of an assasination plot against an English king. He was not the leader of the assasination, but he is the most famous person involved with the plot. Guy Fawkes Day is November 5th and is celebrated in England by throwing dolls of Guy Fawkes into bonfires. The day celebrates the foiling of the assasinaiton plot.

After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, English Catholics who had been persecuted under her rule had hoped that her successor, James I, would be more tolerant of there religion. As He even had a Catholic mother, but despite that he was no more lenient that Elizabeth.

Therefore a number of men plotted against him and came up with the solution to blow up Parliament. - (13 members were involved within the plot.)

There leader was known as Robert Catesby and they hired Guy Fawkes to do the task of blowing up parliament. As that was there solution.

All involved within the plot were Catholics.

Within the day of November 5th there plan was set and Guy Fawkes hid amongst 36 Fully loaded barrels of gun-powder in a cellar beneath the House of Lords.

Earlier on within the plot the members involved had doubts and began to have second thoughts as the plot developed further.

One Involved wrote an anonymous letter to his good friend 'Lord Monteagle' warning him to stay out of 'The Houses of Parliament' on November 5th.

Unfortunately the letter reached the king and he ordered the cellar to be checked, The Kings men searched the cellar and found the 36 Barrels of Gunpowder and along with it, Guy Fawkes. They Captured Guy Fawkes, Tortured him and then later went on to execute him.

To answer your specific question the main reason were that the members plotting against Elizabeth I's Successor, James I were Catholics and not Protestants.

This All took place in Parliament on 5th November 1603 after the death of Elizabeth I.

A simple way of remembering the event of 'The Gunpowder Plot' is this:

'Remember remember the fifth of November

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

I see no reason why gunpowder, treason

Should ever be forgot...'

Guy Fawkes (or Guido Fawkes as he called himself) (1570-1606) was a Catholic religious fanatic and would-be terrorist who was involved in an attempt in 1605 to blow up the State Opening of Parliament with a large charge of gunpowder. This was part of a scheme to annihilate the Protestant leaders of the England, allowing a Catholic regime to be imposed. It failed because one of the conspirators attempted to tip off Catholic nobles who were not involved not to attend the State Opening.

The powder was stored in a rented undercroft under the House of Lords chamber, and Fawkes was guarding it when it was discovered by Sir Thomas Knyvet, a few hours before the ceremony was due. He was arrested, brutally tortured for two months, and condemned to a grotesque execution by being gelded, gutted, and chopped into pieces while being slowly hanged. He escaped this by jumping off the scaffold when the noose was put around his neck, so that his neck broke.

There are some indications that the entire Gunpowder Plot might have been set up the king's spymaster (Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury) as an entrapment.

Guy Fawkes is sometimes considered the only man ever to have gone into Parliament with honest intentions.
