Tarmac was first invented by John MacAdam. got it?
Not True: John MacAdam came up with the idea of using graded stone to pave a road.
It was Edgar Purnal Hooley who when passing a works noticed that where a pot of tar had been spilled and stone scattered over to soak it up, there was a tight bound surface with no dust. He went on to develop tar-macadam and the company he formed went on to be the company we know as Tarmac today.

∙ 15y agoThe original term was tarmacadam, and was later shortened to tarmac in the latter part of the 19th century. John Loundon Mac Adam began experimenting with, what was then, a revolutionary technique of using uniform crushed, then graded stone in 1783, and began using the "macadamization" system in 1816 when he became surveyor for the Bristol Turnpike Trust. As this system became more refined it evolved into tarmac, and the first so called road was built in Paris in 1854, eighteen years after the death of John Loudon Mac Adam.
