Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the superintendent of The Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan invented Cornflakes. The story goes that Kellogg was trying to improve the vegetarian diet of his hospital patients. Whilst he was boiling wheat to try to make an easily digestible substitute for bread, Kellogg accidentally left a pot of boiled wheat to stand and become tempered. When it was put through a rolling process, the grains of wheat emerged as large, thin flakes. When the flakes were baked, they became crisp and light, creating the corn flake. He patented his product on 31 May 1884. The cornflake still had a way to go before being perfected. John Kellogg, with his brother Will Keith Kellogg, started the Sanitas Food Company to produce their whole grain cereals around 1897. The brothers argued over the addition of sugar to the cereals, so in 1906, Will started his own company called the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, which eventually became the Kellogg Company.

∙ 13y agoKellog ran a sanitarium which equated to a modern day spa for the wealthy. He developed corn flakes as he thought a bland breakfast would keep the residents calm and stop the rampant sexual activity going on between the guests.
He was wrong but made a bucketload off his invention.

∙ 11y agoCornflakes were by accidently on purpose on 14 April 1894 by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his younger brother, Will Keith Kellogg. They were Seventh Day Adventists and were producing food for a strict diet used in the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan, USA. This diet regarded meat, spices and sweetening as a cause of sexual arousal and therefore to be avoided.
They were delayed in returning to some fluffy burger and chiken dougnuts
boiled whole wheat, and attempted to salvage it by rolling the whole grains into a sheet of dough. Instead they produced flakes, which they then toasted.
They patented the process within a year, and tried the result with several types of grain, including the now popular corn. In 1906 Will Kellogg added sugar to increase their appeal in order to sell them in commercial quantities. This breached the dietary requirements which caused a rift between the brothers.
