Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic Republicans. His administration was an example of what came to be called Jefferson Democracy. He opposed a federal bank and wealthy interests against the working man. This group splinted in later years and Andrew Jackson was the first democrat elected president.

Alexander Hamilton, started the Democrat party.

Jeffersom started the Republican party
Thomas Jefferson has been widely considered the founder of the Democrat Party. Originally it was called the Jeffersonian Republicans or the Democratic Republicans. The key figures were Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. It was a more or less loose knit group of politicians who believed in retaining an agronomical economy, favoring ties with the French while opposing British influence after the Revolutionary War. They were pulled together by their opposition to Alexander Hamilton and his policies of promoting banking and industry in the new United States, as well as the mistaken fear that George Washington and Hamilton were working to institute a monarchy.

Of course, a variety of people were part of the Democratic party, but many Americans look up to President Andrew Jackson as the founder of this political party.

In 1824, General Jackson ran for president against Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams (son of John Adams, the second president). When Henry Clay did not win, he struck a deal with Adams saying that if Adams was to appoint him in his cabinet, then he will urge all of his voters to vote for Adams. Even though Jackson won the popular vote, Adams collected the electoral votes. This put Adams over the top, and he won the presidency. Jackson claimed that the two had made a corrupt bargain. This election was a very competitive, and very dirty election, for both of the candidates. Historians look upon it as "mudslinging".

After the loss, Jackson promised he would "let the people rule again", and he founded the democratic party with hopes of letting commoners vote and have a say too. 'Til then, only the rich, the "well-fed, well-bred, and well-read" were allowed a vote.

The U.S. Democratic political party started in the 1830s. It grew from the remnants of the Democratic Republican party which collapsed in the mid 1820s. Andrew Jackson, 7th US president is widely credited with bringing the party together.

Alexander Hamilton along with John Adams started America's first political party, the Federalists in 1789. In 1792 Jefferson and Madison formed the Democratic-Republican Party which has no direct relationship to the modern Republican Party. The Democratic-Republican Party saw four presidents in a row, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Qunicy Adams. In 1828 Adams lost the election to Andrew Jackson who dropped the Republican from the original party name, which then became the Democrat Party. The Republican Party didn't form until 1854, in Ripon Wis. No matter how people try to spin it, Jefferson and Madison are the fathers of the Democratic Party. A few years after Jackson became president, some of its members and supporters of Quincy Adams spun off the Democrat Party to form the Whig Party, and much later some of the members of that party helped form the Republican Party.
