Sally - not unusual for a 16-year-old girl - flits from one thing to another on a moments notice, and is obviously (to the reader) fairly shallow. She does, however, show more common sense than Holden does in some things. But her shallowness alone earns her Holden's ultimate put-down: "Phony".

His phoniness is ironic because the school Pency Prep. is taken to be this highly ragarded school with horses, etc. Holden has never seen a horse on campus before which makes it ironic.

Holden calls everyone and everything a 'phony.' He uses the term as people today use 'dumb,' or other common words used to show a general distrust or admonishment.

In The Catcher in the Rye what did holden think of George Something?

Holden considered "George something . . . I don't even remember", to be a typical snobby, phony Ivy League jerk. The fact that "George" pointedly horned in on Holden's date did not help Holden's opinion of him either.

Why is Holden Caulfield a hypocrite?

Holden Caulfield is a hypocrite because he spends practically the whole book ranting about people who are "phony" and who "just kill him" because of their behavior, but yet he himself does not live on completely who he is and instead lets himself be molded by his surroundings. He hides his insightful opinions and indulges in behaviors such as drinking, smoking and whoring, though he claims that he does not think much of it. He flits back and forth from one feeling to another. For example, on his date his Sally Hayes, he goes from loving her to hating her in a matter of minutes. Though he claims his feelings were felt truly at the time, his inability to think logically about his actions and feelings shows that he still holds some immaturity and is terribly confused.

Why did holden think the woman who cried through the movie was a phony?

The woman sobbing through the movie had a little girl with her that kept asking to go to the bathroom, or the like. The woman kept telling the girl to shut up and leave her alone. Holden (correctly) saw the phoniness in the woman in that her sobbing at the movie itself would give people the impression she was kind-hearted. Her dealing with the little girl, however, showed Holden that she was, in his words, "as kind-hearted as a G...D... wolf".

What are the major conflicts in The Catcher in the Rye?

The Catcher in the Rye is about a week or two that the main character; Holden Caufield spends figuring out his life in a deep but humerous way, after he is kicked out of Princeton school. He waits out the time gap between the time he gets kicked out and the time he goes home because he ashamed of what his parents will think, as this is not the first school he has been kicked out of. He goes to crazy hotels and nightclubs, goes on dates with old friends, and finally sees his sister, who opens his eyes to the world he is missing out on. His cynical views and extreamly frank outook on life are deep, but funny, and will touch any person who reads his brief memoir; The Catcher in the Rye. This is one of my favorite books, and it never gets old. If get it or if you don't, you will still love it. This is an amazing book and makes you long to just live in the moment, I strongly encourage you to read it.
