If you are asking the first gold nugget ever found, then there is no way to know. In the California Gold rush, however, the first nugget was found on January 24, 1848, by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill, in Coloma, California.

If you are asking about the California gold rush it was John Marshal in 1848 who discovered gold at Sutters sawmill in Columa. But, if you are asking about in history that can't be answered. Gold has been used as far back as the ancient Celtic tribes, in ancient Egypt, and other ancient societies. I have seen gold jewelry in museums that are over 5,000 years old.

The Beyers and Holtermann nugget was the largest single piece of reef gold ever discovered in the world.
