Rabies is still a very serious virus that is passed by infected fluids across different animals (including humans). Until recently there has been no known cure or treatment for rabies except for preventative measures. To prevent rabies one can get vaccinated as a precaution or after being bitten by an animal that is infected. Rabies virus has a high gestation period and symptoms do not show up immediately. There have been two known cases of actually curing rabies at this time. One was a 15 year old boy in Brazil and the other a 16 year old girl in Wisconsin. Both situations utilized the "Wisconsin protocol" which involves putting the patient into a medically induced coma. The coma protects the body from any harm the hallucinations from the virus can induce in the patients mind.

The vaccine was first developed by Pasteur and Roux in the late 19th century.

There is no known cure as such for rabies, but there have been developed some methods of which may pose as a working approach.

Treatment for rabies consists of, basically, attempting to prevent rabies from developing in the first place, either through routine vaccinations or post-exposure prophylaxis (essentially a multi-dose vaccination along with a rabies-specific immunoglobulin).

Rabies is:

The one most dangerous virus in existence.

This because it 'always' end fatal if it is not 'properly' treated within the first two days of a suspected infection. It is a highly successful disease that effectively breaks the cross spieces barrer. It does however not infect birds or fish.

To day, there have only been one case in the US where a patient actually have survived after developing symptoms of Rabies. This was a 15 year old girl named Jeanna Giese of Fond du Lac.

She spent two years afterwards re-learning how to speak, walk etc.

The 'cure' was to induce a shut-down of the brain so that rabies itself could not totally hijack it and kill.

A highly dangerous approach but it gave the victims immune system time to fight the infection.

The doctor who thought of this approach on a 'cure' is Dr. Rodney Willoughby of Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.

He later published details of his protocol on the Web where any doctor could use it. It became known as the Milwaukee Protocol.

Jeanna Giese was treated in 2004. With the use of the Milwaukee Protocol, 3 people have survived rabies by the end of 2008. All children.

Although we can not say that this is anything more than a needle in a haystack as in regards to a cure, it does provide a working approach for some of those unfortunate enough to get the disease. This gives hope to those with none.
