Tracing influences is often highly speculative. Everybody has been influenced by The Beatles, and the Beatles were influenced by Chuck Berry among others. However, Nirvana, the originator of the "grunge" genre, is thought to have been influenced by both heavy metal, of which Black Sabbath is probably the primary source, and punk, of which the Sex Pistols were the most influential (although we should probably mention the Clash as well). But there could have been a hundred other influences as well. Artists are influenced by lots of other artists.
