Peter was questioned about and denied being an associate of Jesus by the girl who was at the door of the palace of the high priest, a group of people warming themselves at the fire there, and finally to a relation of Malchus, whose ear he had earlier severed.
Not sure which Gospel tells the story but Jesus told Peter that he would deny him 3 times before the cock crowed. After saying that he would never deny him, he then went on to deny him 3 times as Jesus had foretold and was sorrowful at doing so.
Peter was afraid for his life, and due to the danger of being associated with Jesus on that particular night, he denied knowing Jesus three times. Jesus had predicted that Peter would deny him three times before the cock crowed in the morning.
