Today, many of us have been taught that the Greek Gods were mythological beings. In the ancient times, the people revered their Gods just as much as religious people do today. In the earliest attempts to explain the world around them, philosophers and respected story tellers would use the names of people they had heard of from others.

According to the Historical Theory all the persons mentioned in mythology were once real human beings, and the legends relating to them are merely the additions of later times.

The Allegorical Theory teaches that all the ancient myths were symbolic. The Physical Theory subscribed to the idea that the elements of air, fire, and water were originally the objects of religious adoration, and the deities were given human form and names to explain these powers of nature.

As the people heard the stories, they believed them to be a reasonable explanation of the way things were, and accepted the Gods into their daily lives.
