James Buchanan, whom most historians had considered, at least until recently, to be the worst President in the history of the United States, defeated two contenders for the Presidency: John Fremont (the first presidential candidate of the newly-formed Republican Party); and a former President, Millard Fillmore, (the last Whig President). Election Results:

Buchanan:174 electoral votes, 1.83 million popular votes

Fremont: 114 electoral votes, 1.34 million popular votes

Fillmore: 8 electoral votes, 873,000 popular votes
