Because The Bible is actually a collection of 66 books, it was written by many people (40 writers). Some major authors are Moses and Paul, who are credited with writing multiple books each. Each prophetic book in the Old Testament is typically credited to have been written by the person that it is named after, same with the Gospels. Acts was written by the same Luke who wrote the Gospel of Luke. Paul wrote almost all of the New Testament after Acts, except for the letters named after someone else, Hebrews (whose author is still unknown though many stating it belongs to Paul), and Revelation, which was written by John.

It is important to note, however, that the Bible is the 'inspired word of God' given to these particular writers for all our edifications (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Many people wrote the Bible.

Here is a guide to the majority of the books:

Old Testament in very rough order that they were written

  • Moses wrote the first 5 books in 2000BC.
  • All the books of the prophets were given the name of the prophet.
  • The Psalms were mostly written by Moses and King David with a few written by the Sons of Korah.
  • King Solomon wrote: proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Songs of Solomon

New Testament - in the rough order they were written

  • Paul's 13 letters (1 and 2 Thess, Gal, 1 and 2 Cor, Rom, Eph, Phil, Col, Phile, 1 and 2 Tim, Titus)
  • Peter, James, Jude wrote their books
  • Matthew, Mark, Luke wrote their gospels
  • John wrote his 5 books last

I think there were about 40 authors writing throughout about 2000 years. A fascinating testimony to the patience and graciousness of God!

Nobody knows for sure.

People used fake names, the same name, one name, stolen names, and so on.

Nobody knows for sure, each book is written by different people or a combination of people.

It would be like asking who wrote the Dictionary. You could have the same answer.

God!

The Bible has far more than ten authors (Moses, Joshua, Samuel, David, Solomon, etc) in the Old Testament alone that spans over several centuries.

For example, there are books from 12 minor prophets (Amos, Hosea, Malachi, etc.) not including the four major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel). That's 16 authors for just the prophet books.

Proverbs was written by Solomon and 14 books of the new testament was written by Paul and the rest of it was written by apostles, except for Revelation. We don't know exactly who wrote Revelation but we know it was a man named John.

Men wrote the Bible inspired by God. Men use their own personalities and backgrounds, to write Gods messages. God guided this process and men wrote exactly what God wanted us to have. This is the doctrine of the inspiration of the Bible.
