The descendants of Abraham and Hagar's child, Ishmael (had 12 sons - see Genesis 25:13-15 for names) grew to become many different people who lived and travelled along the ancient spice route between Gilead and Egypt (Genesis 37:25-28; Judges 8:24). See related link below for more details:

Another answer:

More succinctly, Ishmael's descendants "ARE" the "arab" people, today. It's their relationship to Abraham, their father, that has pitted them against the descendants of Isaac, their father's other son born to his wife, Sarah.

The bitterness and strife that this situation created between their father's wife, Sarah, and Hagar, Ishmael's mother and Sarah's servant... has followed and haunted the descendants of these "half-brothers" all down through the course of history. And it's this that is at the root and the source of the "Arab/Israeli" conflict to this day.

"Then Sarai said to Abram, 'IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! Now this servant of mine is pregnant, and she despises me, though I myself gave her the privilege of sleeping with you. The LORD will make you pay for doing this to me!'

"Abram replied, 'Since she is your servant, you may deal with her as you see fit.' So Sarai treated her harshly, and Hagar ran away." (Gen.16:5-6 NLT New Living Translation)

God's Word even offers a general prophetic description of Ismael's children:

"This son [Ishmael] of yours [Hagar] will be A WILD ONE - free and untamed as a wild donkey! HE WILL BE AGAINST EVERYONE, and everyone will be against him. Yes, he will live AT ODDS WITH THE REST OF HIS BROTHERS. (verse 12)

And this is the source of the unsolvable and ongoing "religious conflict" that exists between Ishmael's and Isaac's descendants today [continuously "at odds" with each other] -- God's promises to their "common father" -- and the argument over whose promises they are.

"...Abraham said to God, 'Yes, may Ishmael enjoy your special blessing!' But God replied, 'Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm My Everlasting Covenant WITH HIM and his descendants.

"As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will cause him to multiply and become a great nation... But My Covenant is with Isaac..." (Gen.17:18-21 NLT)

Ishmael's descendants have vehemently refused to accept God's decision on this matter. Little wonder, then, that they are "at continuous odds" with all men.

A:According to Genesis 32:3, the earliest descendants of Esau were the Edomites, although anthropologists give no credence to the Edomite descent from Esau. Later known as the Idumeans, the Edomites were conquered by the Jews and forcibly converted to Judaism. The Edomites are thus the ancestors of many of today's Jews, who are therefore according to biblical tradition descended from Esau.

Ishmael is the legendary first son of Abraham, and in Jewish belief the ancestor of all Arabs. There is no evidence that the Arabs believed they were descended from Ishmael prior to the advent of Islam. Islam taught the Arabs to accept as true much of what is in the Old Testament, so from this time forward, many Arabs have believed that at least one tribe really was descended from Ishmael, including the Prophet Muhammad.

A:Historians say that Ishmael was not a real, historical person, but The Bible says that his descendants were the Ishmaelites, the Arabs. This is a tradition that Islam has also accepted.

According to the Bible, Abraham had a son by Hagar, called Ishmael, who would be the father of a nation. Judaic tradition is that the sons of Ishmael, called Ishmaelites, are the Arabs. Since before the time of Muhammad (c 570-632 CE), the Arabs themselves had begun to accept that they really are descended from Ishmael.

The descendants of Esau are listed in Genesis ch. 36 (see attached Related Link). They lived in Edom, also known as mount Seir (ibid.), which is identified with Petra in southwest Jordan. According to Jewish tradition, Esau's descendants (or some of them) later relocated to Italy. The Italians are from Yefet (Japheth), but the Roman patrician class had a strong influx of Esau's descendants. It is for this reason that the Roman Empire (and later the Church) is seen as being of Esau.

All Prophets after Hazrat Ibrahim (Peace be upon him) were his descendent. There were two lineages, one that started with Hazrar Ishaque (Peace be upon him) and had Hazrat Yahuda, Hazrat Musaa (Moses) and Hazrat Isaa (Jesus) (Peace be upon them) were chief Anbiya. Other lineage that was started by Hazrat Ismail (Peace be upon him) has only one nabi who was Hazrat Mohammad Mustufa Salle Ala Alaih Wassal.

A:According to the Bible, Abraham's son Ishmael was the biological forefather of all the Arabs. This is a tradition that is also accepted by the Islamic faith, although there is no evidence that pre-Islamic Arabs thought they were descended from Ishmael. Arabs now exist throughout the Middle East and right across northern Africa.

Historians regard Ishmael as not really historical, and say that the Arabs existed long before the time attributed to him.
