a The flute is a musical instrument of the woodwind family. Unlike other woodwind instruments, a flute is a reedless wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air against an edgeIt was also used in festivals and to bring joy to others
The flute is a standard orchestral instrument, going back at least as far as the classical period (1750-1825), so you'll generally find it in all symphonic music from Mozart and Haydn going forward. But it can also be used in Jazz or Rock as well. Claude Bolling has a wonderful album "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio". The band Jethro Tull uses a lot of flute. Traffic uses some too. The song "It Better End Soon" on Chicago's second album, Chicago II, features a kick-ass flute solo!
