Which to choose to plant either a service berry autumn brilliance or a flowering crab tree but I dont want messy fruits what do you suggest?

If you want to avoid messy fruits, I would suggest planting the Serviceberry 'Autumn Brilliance' (Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'). While it produces small edible fruits, they are generally not messy and can be enjoyed by birds or harvested for personal use. Flowering crab trees, on the other hand, produce small apples or crabapples that can create more mess in your yard.

∙ 15y agocrabapple trees can and will litter the ground beneath them including sidewalks and anything else you may not want apples on, including your lawn . I plant crabapples only on a raised terraced area in my backyard so that my husband doesn't run them over with the lawn mower. Also if you have deer they will be attracted to them and possibly to your other plants as well. On the other hand the "Autumn Brilliance" serviceberry has very small one-half inch fruits that persist and do not litter the ground as they are quickly eaten by the birds. They are delicious and fit for human consumption. The fall color is spectacular in contrast to the crabapples usually straggly appearance at the end of summer. The serviceberry has an open airiness about it whereas crabs can cast dense shade.
