The Radical Republicans were indeed the radical wing of the new Republican Party. Abraham Lincoln needed their support to win the 1860 presidential election. He also needed their support to carry on the US Civil War. Many of the radicals wanted the war to be one to end slavery. Lincoln was a moderate Republican when compared to the radicals. His first goal was to keep the US untied and to wage a war to do so. He believed the slavery issue could be solved after the states were re-united. He later used the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure to disrupt the Southern war effort. US slave border states were not included in the Emancipation. War Democrats and the Radical Republicans both criticized the performance of President Lincoln during the war.

In correspondence to Stephen A. Douglas' friends, he indicated that Abraham Lincoln was not a radical or fanatical Republican. Douglas had admiration for Lincoln. In public, however, politics prevailed. Douglas had to paint Lincoln as an abolitionist and a divisive political figure.
Lincoln was a moderate-- certainly not a radical. He was not an abolitionist and he believed in the union and the Constitution. After the war began, he issued his Emancipation Proclamation which was pretty radical, but it only applied to the states that were in rebellion.
President Lincoln believed punishing the south would serve no useful purpose and would only delay healing the torn nation. This was in contrast to the radical wing of the Republican Party.
The quest for the Republican Party's presidential nominations was not easy for Abraham Lincoln. Upon securing the nomination and winning the presidential election of 1860, Lincoln included in his administration some of his rivals within the party. This was an effort to preserve the Party's unity as it was a divided party when the radical wing is considered. Lincoln appointed Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Frederick William Seward to his cabinet. All of them had aspirations to be the head of the Republican Party.
