The main difference is that, unlike Alzheimer’s, dementia is not a disease; it is a group of symptoms that impact memory, ability to communicate, and performance of daily tasks. It usually starts with simple forgetfulness and can progress to an inability to care for oneself. There is more than one type of dementia, and people can suffer from multiple types simultaneously.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. It gets worse with time and affects language, thought, and memory, and it’s currently incurable. No exact cause is known.

Dementia is the name for a group of brain disorders that make it hard to remember, think clearly, make decisions, or even control your emotions.

Alzheimer’s disease is one of those disorders, but there are many different types and causes of dementia.

Dementia isn’t just about simple memory mishaps like forgetting someone’s name or where you parked. A person with dementia has a hard time with at least two of the following: Memory, Communication and speech, Focus and concentration, Reasoning and judgment, Visual perception (can’t see the difference in colors or detect movement, or sees things that aren’t there).

Alzheimer's disease is a particular type of brain disease, but dementia is a broad phrase. It is characterised by dementia symptoms that progressively worsen over time. Early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease frequently involve changes in memory, thinking, and reasoning abilities because the disease first affects the area of the brain connected to learning.
