Among the contiguous 48 states, Minnesota is the northernmost state because of a surveying error. In establishing the International Boundary, this error created the Northwest Angle, a small area above the 49th parallel that is part of Minnesota.

Since Alaska is on the North American continent, it is the northernmost state in the continental US.

In the 48 lower (contiguous) US states, the northernmost is Minnesota, which extends slightly across the 49th parallel at the Lake of the Woods.

(Maine may look like the most northern but maps are distorted because you cannot spread a sphere into a perfect rectangle.)
