A physical change changes the property of a substance without changing the substance completely. In other words, a physical change is reversible. This change that occurs in the physical property/properties of a substance without altering its composition. A physical change:

  • Possibly canchange withstate of matter (sublimation, decomposition, evaporation, melting, freezing, and condensation).
  • No new material is formed.
  • Possibly can dissolve.
  • Possibly can occur either by increasing or decreasing the temperature.
  • Is reversible.
A physical change is any change not involving a change in the substance's chemical identity.
a physical change is the color shape taste and smell of a substance.
A physical change is where an object changes is size/ shape

A change in a substance that does not change its identity.

EX:

popping a balloon

chopping wood

tearing, crumbling, folding paper

pretty much anything that changes its shape, size, or color without changing its whole identity.

Physical Changes

Physical changes are concerned with energy and states of matter. A physical change does not produce a new substance. Changes in state or phase (melting, freezing, vaporization, condensation, sublimation) are physical changes. Examples of physical changes include crushing a can, melting an ice cube, and breaking a bottle.

How to Tell Chemical & Physical Changes Apart

A chemical change makes a substance that wasn't there before. There may be clues that a chemical reaction took place, such as light, heat, color change, gas production, odor, or sound. The starting and ending materials of a physical change are the same, even though they may look different.

A physical change is where you can see the change on the outside of something.

For example, take a dog.... if it grows, or its fur gets lighter or darker then it is physically changing.

A physical change alters only the state of matter. It does not change the material's composition. Physical change happens if you cut, grind, bend, break, split, crack or crush a material.
