Regular Coca-Cola is more dense because of the sugar (or corn syrup) that is used to sweeten it. Because artificial sweeteners are more concentrated, there is less added to achieve the same sweetness in diet drinks.

Answer: Both are wrong. The diet coke will float, while the coke can will sink. Due to the Aspartame being a 180 times more sweeter than regular sugar, you would not need as much to make the drink sweet as you would in a regular can of coke! This can be proven by calculating both of their densities.

Water's Density: 1000 kg/cm3 or 100 g/mL

--Both are right; however, the first one is what Canadians use, while the second one is what the Americans use (I'm Canadaian by the way).

  1. You will first need to find the volume that's in a regular sized can, which is 355 mL (do not worry, 1 mL= 1 cm3)
  2. Next, you will find both the amount of sugar and aspartame in the coke and the diet coke (Coca Cola has 39 g of sugar, while the Diet Coke has 0.2 g of aspartame)
  3. Finally, to find the mass of both the Coke and Diet Coke, you will add the volume of liquid with the sugar (for Coke) and the aspartame (for the Diet Coke)
  4. Coca Cola's mass equals to 394, 000 kg or 394 g; Diet Coke's mass equals to 355, 200 kg or 355.2 g

Coca Cola (Canadian): D= m/v

D= 394, 000 kg / 355 cm3

D= 1109.9 kg/cm3

Therefore, we can see that the Coca Cola's density ismuch greater than the density of water, which explains why it sinks to the bottom of the container. However, if we were to add a 100 g of sugar into the water, both of the cans will float. The reason behind this is that the sugar particles mix in with the water and making it even more densed (heavier) than a can of coke!

The denser one will be heavier with same volume of liquid. You'd need sensitive and acurate scales as I can't imagine the difference to be much.
