Lead is an element. Its elemental symbol is Pb (shorthand of the Latin word plumbum, as it was used for Plumbing) and its atomic number is 82. It is the second to last nonradioactive element. As it is an element and therefore is pure. Everything is made of elements; elements are made of nothing but protons, neutrons, and electrons.
