∙ 9y agoBlended fruit drinks were invented in the US in the 1930's when electric blenders were first sold to households. However they were not called smoothies back at that time. The fruit drinks the Americans made in the 30's and 40's were based on Brazilian fruit juice recipes.
It wasn't until the 1970's that blended fruit juices were given the name "smoothies" by a fruit juice businessman called Stephen Kuhnau. He admitted that he "stole" the name from a similar but unrelated fruit juice drink that hippies consume.
