The celebration of St. Patrick's Day was imported to America and other countries by nostalgic Irish immigrants in an attempt to inspire unity, assert a presence, and to celebrate their cultural integration. After Irish immigrants found their way to America, the colonies celebrated St. Patrick's Day for the first time in Boston in 1737. In New York City, the earliest celebration was reportedly held in 1756 at the Crown and Thistle Tavern. Parades were not initially included in the activities. The first St. Patrick's Day parade was in New York City on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the streets accompanied by highland Bagpipes, ancient instruments capable of emitting a haunting wail (used by Celtic soldiers to intimidate enemies).

The St. Patrick's Day parade was first held in Boston in 1737, organized by the Charitable Irish Society. New York's celebration began on 18 March 1762 when Irish soldiers in the British army marched through the city. The predominantly French-speaking Canadian city of Montréal, in the province of Québec has the longest continually running Saint Patrick's Day parade in North America, since 1824. The city's flag has the Irish emblem, the shamrock, in one of its corners. Ireland's cities all hold their own parades and festivals. These cities include Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Derry, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, and Waterford. Parades also take place in other Irish towns and villages. More history:

After Irish immigrants found their way to America, the Colonies celebrated St Patrick's Day for the first time in Boston, in 1737.

In New York City, the earliest celebration was held in 1756 at the Crown and Thistle Tavern, according to the U.S. Department of International Information programs.

Parades were NOT initially included in the activities.

The first St. Patrick's Day parade was born in Manhattan, on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City streets accompanied by the bold familiar command of highland bagpipes, ancient instruments capable of emitting a haunting shrill wail exploited by early Celtic soldiers to intimidate the enemy.

It is believed that St Patrick's Day has been celebrated prior to the 1600s in Ireland. St Patrick's Day was first placed on the liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church early in the 1600s. The first St Patrick's Day Parade in the world was in Boston in 1737, though St Patrick's day had been celebrated before that in the US by Irish immigrants, so 1737 could be considered the first public celebration of St Patrick's Day in the US.
