NATO was signed into effect on April 4, 1949, in Washington, DC. Discussions had been ongoing between nations in an attempt to block the spread of communism into Europe after the end of World War II. The original members of NATO were Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the United States.
NATO was a military alliance set up in 1949 which joined 13 western states in a treaty. It's purpose was to ensure that if any one of the states was attacked, the other would defend them.
