Many different locations were used in the series 14 year history. A sound stage on NBC studio lot, Incline Village near the California/Nevada border, Lake Tahoe, and many other sites around Los Angeles.
In various places in the L.A. area and Truckee and Lake Tahoe area.
They were on their ranch land named The Ponderosa, in Nevada.
The Cartwright men made their home on the Ponderosa Ranch near Lake Tahoe, a 2 hour horse ride from Virginia City, Nevada.
Most of the interiors were filmed in and around Los Angeles. Some exteriors were filmed at the Bonanza set located in Trukee, CA, near the California/Nevada state line close to Lake Tahoe.

EVERY episode of Bonanza was filmed and aired in color. Color TV was brand-new, and Bonanza's big draw to advertisers was that it, unlike Gunsmoke, was going to be in full color from the start.

I would also like to know who wants the Chevrolet branding iron from the Bonanza tv show. Believe it or not, I have the original one used to set fire to the Virginia City map before each show. My uncle worked for Campbell/Ewald as a vice president in San Francisco when Bonanza was aired. It was gifted to him by his tv people sometime around 1963. His name was Thomas Milburn "MIL" Johnston.
