The reformation happened in the former Roman Empire. Catholicism had become the dominant religion beginning with the Roman emperor Constantine. Most of the challenges to the authority of the Catholic church and the conversions to Protestantism happened on the periphery of the empire, Rome being the centre. The former Roman empire included modern Italy, Germany, Spain, Britain, Poland, Ukraine, Balkans, Greece, Northern Africa,Turkey, and a bunch of the area surrounding those.
