Confucianism originated in China. It was founded by Chinese philosopher Confucious in the 5th-6th century BC, who was born in the small feudal state of Lu - now Shantung Province - in 551 BC.
The actual words "Confucianism" and "Confucian" are not Chinese terms, however. They are western terms, derived from the Latinised name Confucius, and appearing in Europe only during the 18th century. Confucius is just a Latinised form of the Chinese K'ung-fu-tzu, "Master K'ung."
