While there may have been an earlier usage, the first time this expression became popular was back in 1931, when it was the title of a hit song, and was also in a Broadway musical. The meaning is that life is sweet and delightful, especially when you are in love.
C. A bowl filled with apples is the more porous of the four. Porosity is a function of the size of the fruit. The larger the fruit, the more porous the bowl will be (the more air or water that can be placed in the bowl). The smaller the fruit, the less porous the bowl will be. Compare with a bowl of stones and a bowl of sand. The stones are more porous because the sand can be more densely compacted, leaving very little room for water.

Discard the juice or save for another use. If using frozen cherries, it is not necessary to thaw them. Combine well drained canned cherries or frozen cherries, granulated sugar, tapioca and almond extract in a large mixing bowl; mix well. Let stand 15 minutes.Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry; fill with cherry mixture. Dot with butter. Adjust top crust, cutting slits for steam to escape, or cut top crust into strips and make a lattice-top pie.Bake in a preheated 400-degree oven 50 to 55 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. An even easier way is to used canned cherry pie filling. Just put the filling in a 9-inch crust and top with another crust. Bake the same as above.

It is a twist of the cliche "Life isn't a bowl of cherries". Decades ago, I saw an illustration, similar to that by Mary Engelbreit, but not identical (google it). A chair stacked precariously with bowls. Life is precarious, whereas, a bowl of cherries is bliss. I chanced to be searching for the illustration I remember, when I came upon this question. Why, yes. It is cherry season in Switzerland, and I'm about to make a pie.
