Don't know the vehicle in detail but the sensor can only be either round or next to the front crankshaft pulley or on round the flywheel, perhaps on the bell housing? the crankshaft sensor for a Jeep 2000 is located behind the starter you have to remove the starter to replace it Tommy :-)
A 5.2 crank sensor is located on the rear of the cylinder head on the passenger side. It is at where the block&head bolt together. You will need a (I believe) a 7mm hex head. Use 1/4 drive with extensions and several swivel joints. remove spark plug wiresto ease access.
Once you see it, you'll understand.
I think that might be the Camchaft positioning sensor, a very common mistake. I've even heard of people taking their jeep in to get the crank sensor replaced and the mechanic replaces the cam sensor instead. I believe the crank sensor (on the 1993 jeep grand Cherokee limited anyway) with the 5.2l v8 is located on the passenger side of the vehicle mounted on the bellhousing. I'm actually getting ready to replace mine right now.
Both answers are correct for the crank (crankshaft) sensor. The camshaft sensor is located on a plate in the distributor.
on the 4.0 6 cyl engine the crank position sensor is mounted to the bell housing drivers side top. so if you look from drivers side fender it will be just behind the engine where the transmission bell housing bolts to the rear of the engine.towards the top.
For a (U.S.) 6 cylinder, it is on the drivers side near the top of the bell housing. For 5.2 and 5.9 V8s, it is on the passenger side at about a 1 o'clock position (behind engine) where the head meets the block.
I could answer your question, and the others on here by telling you exactly where to locate the item you're looking for on your vehicle. But, I'm not. I believe in teaching someone to fish soo... go down to your local auto-parts store and buy the Haynes or Chilton book for your vehicle. Runs between 15 and 25 bucks and next to buying a OBD code reader, it's the most well spent money you'll ever spend on your vehicle.
The repair book not only tells you how to fix stuff on your vehicle, it also tells you WHERE stuff is... for the most part. And tells you how much fluid to add, and whether your mechanic is going to rip you off. Like my Jeep, it's fuel filter is life of vehicle and is therefor located IN the gas tank, but that doesn't stop Lube places from telling me I should change it. The book though, tells me to tell them to hit the road....
I'm not sure if it's the same on the 2004 but I have a 1989 and it's on the top left side of the transmission bell housing.
