Lycanthropy is derived from King Lycaon who was king of Arcadia. In ancient Greece there were isolated pockets of Aboriginies (people who possessed the land before the Greeks) that had small kingdoms that endured for a time into recorded history. Arcadian was one of these. Legend has it that Zeus once visited ancient Arcadia in disguise. King Lycaon discerned who he was and thought to test him. The King served the God roasted human flesh (one of his own sons no less). Zeus however discerned what the meat was and in punishment turned the King into a wolf.

This legend is the source of the term lycanthropy and allegedly a particular heritage of werewolves.

This legend is thought to be the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew legend of Abraham sacrificing Isaac where the rites of human sacrifice are discouraged and done away with.
