Along with thorium, radium is found in uranium ore (pitchblende) as a decay product of uranium. It was first isolated in 1898 by Marie Curie, Pierre Curie, and Gustave Bemont, in Paris France. Smaller amounts have been extracted from the mineral carnotite (potassium uranium vanadate).
Radium is obtained from the residue of Uranium ores after the Uranium has been extracted. It may be of interest to know that Mme. Marie Curie needed 10 Tonnes (10 000Kg) of Pitchblende residue and 3 years of refining to produce 0.1 grammes of pure Radium Chloride.
Don't try this at home.
Today radium has only limited applications in research laboratories, for example for the preparation of radon standard solutions, in neutron sources of the type Ra-Be, etc.
Possible use in radiotherapy of some cancers.
Radium was used in the past for luminescent painting of watches and other instruments, was used in toothpaste, cosmetics, etc. These applications are not permitted now because radium is strongly radioactive and dangerous.
It is present in small amounts as a part of uranium ores (like pitchblende).
Radium was first obtained as a byproduct of uranium and vanadium mining.
Radium metal is obtained by electrolysis of radium chloride.
Radium comes from uranium decay

Radium is an element itself. It was isolated by Marie Curie from Pitchblende, an ore of Uranium.

Radium was first isolated in 1898 by Marie Skłodowska-Curie, her husband Pierre Curie, and Gustave Bémont. Marie Curie was born in Poland in 1867. She later became a French citizen. The radioactive element polonium (that she isolated earlier in 1898) is named for her native Poland.
Radium was discovered on December 26, 1898 by MarieSklodowska Curie and Pierre Curie. (He did not have a middle name.) It was finally isolated in 1910 by the Curies andAndré-Louis Debierne. (improved answer).
Polonium was discovered by Marie Curie and Pierre Curie in 1898.Radium was discovered by Marie Curie, Pierre Curie and G. Bemont also in 1898.They are two natural elements, metals, extremely radioactive
Studying residues of uranium ores, Marie Curie and Pierre Curie found that these residues are more radioactive than uranium; they attributed this radioactivity to unknown elements. They isolated these elements and named these elements polonium and radium.
