Leif Ericson was born in Iceland, but moved to Greenland in 986. That same year Bjarni Herjolfson, who was following Ericson to Greenland, missed the island and sailed in a south-westerly direction and sighted both the Labrador coast and Newfoundland.
And so hearing of Bjarni Herjolfson's adventures, Leif Ericson led the first voyage the North America around 1000 A.D.

As pointed out above, once the Vikings were happy that they had acquired enough land to survive on, they ceased their pillages and settled for normal lives all over Northern Europe and Middle-England. They were never wiped out.
