If you mean where did it originate, nobody knows. It's caused by a fast-mutating virus and was probably infecting people and animals a long time before it became virulent enough to cause alarm.

Each new year's "flu" starts with millions of Chinese pigs, which incubate it. The pigs pass the virus to ducks (Chinese eat both pork and poultry) Tame ducks pass it to wild ducks and they spread it around the world. People also incubate and infect, so it wouldn't extinquish the flu to kill all the pigs and ducks, even if that could be done.

Mexico's agriculture department said in May 2009 that the Novel H1N1 influenza strain that now has infected people in all countries of the world, a true pandemic, did not originate from hogs at a Smithfield Foods operation. This pork production farm facility had been singled out by some, including critics of modern pork production, as the source of the A-H1N1 flu virus.

Test results by the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture, Ranching, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) confirmed that the novel A-H1N1 virus was not in pigs at the Granjas Carroll de México farm in Veracruz. The pigs also tested negative for other viruses.

By Elizabeth Landau CNN

(CNN) -- While investigators trudge through pig farms and remote villages in Mexico, searching for clues about the new Swine Flu, answers about the virus' origin may finally appear on a computer, based on genetic codes.

At the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, researchers are using public databases to trace the origins of the 2009 H1N1 virus. They've found that the closest relatives to the new virus are viruses that were isolated from pigs in the United States in the past few years.

Their analysis, recently published in Eurosurveillance, suggests that the virus has at least two swine ancestors, one of them related to a virus isolated in North America in 1998.

Still, the relatives are distant, and it's premature to conclude that the virus came from the United States based on this analysis, said Raul Rabadan, study co-author and assistant professor at Columbia.

The first recorded and confirmed cases of the Pandemic H1N1 influenza "Swine Flu/09" were in Mexico and the United States (see the related questions below for more information on this Pandemic Flu).
