Kiwifruit is native to central China.
People say that kiwi fruit comes from New Zealand, but its not. Kiwi fruit actually comes from China, and was actually called Chinese goose berry, but china decided to give the kiwifruit to New Zealand, which is now a traditional fruit to us New Zealanders.

After being introduced to New Zealand were renamed as Chinese Gooseberries because people thought they tasted like gooseberries.
Because of the Cold War they were renamed as Kiwi Fruit
They are cultivated in many countries including the US, Chile, New Zealand, Chile, Portugal, Spain, India, China and Japan. However the biggest producer is Italy.
They are regarded as the national fruit of China.

∙ 8y agoThe kiwifruit was originally called a Chinese gooseberry, which was considered to be an unattractive name. In the 1960s a New Zealand grower came up with the idea of marketing them as "kiwifruit" to play off his nation's symbol, the kiwi bird. Despite the fruit having originated in China and being grown in a number of countries besides New Zealand, the name stuck.
