Roald Dahl got a lot of his inspiration from his own personal childhood experiences. For example, his fondness for a particular lolly/chocolate shop formed the basis for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Being sent to boarding schools was also an unpleasant experience, which probably influenced the writing of "Matilda". The experience of being caned by his headmaster is reflected in "Matilda" and "Danny, the Champion of the World". The loss of his father when he was young can be seen in "James and the Giant Peach".

Roald Dahl's characters were often inspired by his own experiences, people he knew, or a combination of both. He drew inspiration from his childhood, travels, and imagination to create memorable and eccentric characters such as Matilda, Willy Wonka, and The BFG. Dahl's ability to blend real-life characteristics with fantastical traits brought his characters to life in a unique and captivating way.

Some of Roald Dahl's ideas comes from his adventures he had. For example he wrote the book "Boy" about his adventures and family. "Charlie and the chocolate factory" was based when he was in school. The cadbury's chocolate factory sometimes gave each student chocolate for them to test it. He imaged himself working in a chocolate factory and all the people wearing white coats.
