John Quincy Adams was home-schooled by his father and two of his father's law clerks until he was 10. When he was 11, he accompanied his father on a diplomatic mission to France in 1778 where he studied at the Passy Academy, near Paris, and went to the Netherlands with his father in 1780, and studied at the Latin School in Amsterdam and at Leyden University . When the family came back to America, he was tutored by his mother's sister's husband, the Rev. John Shaw in order to prepare for the Harvard entrance exams that gave him junior standing. He then became a junior at Harvard College in 1785 , from which he graduated in 1787 with a BA degree. He then read law under Theophilus Parsons at Newbury-Port, Mass, from 1787 to 1790 and was admitted to the bar in 1790.
